My husband and I live in Salisbury, NC which is approximately 25 minutes north of Charlotte. He is self-employed and I am a retired school teacher. My husband’s love of pets came from his parents who were continually adopting them throughout his childhood. I grew up on a farm and, therefore, have a natural love of all animals. We fortunately live near three animal parks/rescue centers, Tiger World, Zootastic and Lazy Five Ranch. We are often seen at one of these with our grandsons.

My husband and I began our love of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel when our children, now grown, were very small. We knew we wanted to have pets that could live indoors with them but we also had other desires, such as, a pet that would be friendly to visitors (specifically other children since we both come from large families), one that would be playful but never aggressive and one that was not “yappy” (as my husband likes to call those that bark continuously). We did our research and soon discovered the beautiful and loving breed of cavaliers. Our first Cavalier was Liam, a sweet and very calm male who our children were able to love, cuddle and enjoy for eleven years. His passing left a huge hole in our family, so we soon brought a male and female to join us, Dallas and Ellie. Dallas quickly became my shadow, following me everywhere and even standing at my feet while I washed dishes or dried my hair. We still to this day call Dallas the “perfect pet”. He was so loving and so easy to be around. Everyone who visited wanted to take him home with them. He was a handsome boy as well, walking through the house and yard in the confident stance of a lion. Ellie was a spunky little tricolor who followed my husband everywhere. Her favorite place to be was on someone’s lap. She greeted us daily with her energetic little spirit, almost dancing when you came through the door.

Friends and family wanted to experience ‘the wonderful world of Cavaliers’ and therefore wanted one of their own. We had a few litters during the summer months with Dallas and Ellie, but did not consider being “serious breeders” until we came to know Jacki and Linda at Charmed Onz Cavaliers. I was planning to retire from my career as a teacher and knew that I would have time to dedicate to our babies and their babies. Ellie and Dallas were getting older, so, with the anticipation of breeding sometime in the future, we added our princess, Emma to the family. Emma, the daughter of Jacki and Linda’s Beau and Jessie, stole our hearts immediately. As a pup, she was so quick to train, eager to please, so gentle and is also one of the most beautiful Cavaliers we have ever seen. We call her a princess because she totally dislikes getting her feet dirty and works diligently at licking her paws anytime she has been outdoors – she is a prissy lady! At eight weeks old she was a fabulous little traveler through an Ohio “white out” (blizzard) and all the way to NC. Her addition to our family also began a dear friendship with Charmed Onz. We feel that adding Emma was simply meant to be. Through Jacki and Linda, we have learned so much more about Cavaliers, the proper methods for breeding and caring for pups, and are extremely grateful and excited to be able to continue their amazing line through our babies.

Dallas and Ellie passed from old age when Emma turned three. During this same time, we added Sherlock, also of Charmed Onz, and Charlotte to the family. Our energetic and handsome Sherlock loves attention, his toys, chasing butterflies, and wrestling with our girls. Charlotte is hilarious. She is daily entertainment around the house. She loves to watch television, steal toys from Sherlock and hide them under the bed, and thinks she is a bird hunter as she loves to watch them from our screened in porch. All of our Cavaliers are loved dearly by us, our grandson and the rest of our family. We are excited to be able to share our babies through their babies with others who wish to add the love and joy of a Cavalier to their families.

Our veterinarian, Dr. Rebekah Julian, graduated at the top of her class at NC State University and owns Lazy Five Veterinary Hospital   She and her veterinary team provide care for all of the animals at the Lazy Five Ranch, hence, the name of their practice. We consider ourselves fortunate to not only have her care for our Cavaliers but also to have her as a family friend.
